You often keep asking yourself this exact question:
How Do I Finally Make a Change I’ve Been Putting Off for So Long?
There is probably something in your life right now that you already know needs to change.
Maybe you have known it for months. Maybe even years.
You know the outcome of making the change would probably be positive. You know your life could look different on the other side of it. And yet, somehow, you keep putting it off.
Why?
Because every change is uncomfortable.
Change asks us to step into something unknown, and our brain does not necessarily like the unknown. It prefers the rhythm it already knows. It prefers the habits, patterns, and routines it has been practicing for years, even when those patterns are no longer giving us the results we want.
So we stay with the known old thing.
It is not necessarily because we do not want the result badly enough. It is because getting there takes something from us. It takes time. It takes work. It takes energy. It takes practice.
And that hurdle is often what keeps us stuck.
Why Do We Wait Until We Hit the Wall?
Generally, we as humans are very good at making a change when we have no other option.
We hit rock bottom. We hit the wall. Something becomes painful enough that staying where we are is no longer possible.
Then we change.
But what if we did not have to wait until then?
What if we could make the change before we hit the wall?
One of the questions I think we need to ask ourselves is: What is the consequence of waiting?
What are you losing by staying in the status quo? What happens if you continue doing exactly what you are doing now until circumstances finally force you to change?
But there is another question that is just as important, and this one can be much more surprising:
What are you gaining by staying where you are?
There is often an answer.
And it is very personal.
That is why this is not necessarily something you solve by downloading another checklist or creating another action plan. Sometimes you need to have a real conversation about what is actually keeping you stuck, because the answer underneath the obvious answer may surprise you.
The First Change Is Not Your Checklist
Once you recognize that something needs to change, it is tempting to immediately ask, “Okay, what do I need to do?”
I would start somewhere else.
Ask yourself: Who is the person who wants this change?
The old version of you was doing X, Y, and Z. That person was living a certain way, following certain patterns, and getting certain results.
But the new person does not do those things anymore.
That person does something different. That person lives a different life. And because they live differently, they get different results.
So the question becomes: Are you choosing to be that person now, or are you still choosing your old self?
That is where the change begins.
It is an identity shift before it becomes a checklist.
Your Brain Has Been Practicing the Old Way for a Long Time
Deciding who you want to become does not mean you wake up tomorrow and suddenly everything is easy.
Your brain has been wiring and practicing your existing patterns for your whole life. We cannot expect those patterns to disappear overnight just because we made a decision.
This is where practice comes in.
You might need reminders a few times throughout the day. Maybe it is something on your phone screen. Maybe it is a Post-it note in your bathroom. Maybe it is another simple reminder you will see regularly that brings you back to the same message:
This is not who I am anymore. The new person does not do those old things.
And then you practice.
You stay on top of it. You notice when the old patterns show up. You remind yourself of the person you are choosing to become, and you keep going.
Gradually.
Patiently.
Because real change takes time, effort, and practice.
You Do Not Have to Wait for Rock Bottom
If there is a change you have been putting off, you do not necessarily need another strategy to force yourself into action.
You may need to understand why you are still holding onto the person and patterns that created your current situation.
What are you losing by staying here?
What are you gaining?
And who would you need to become to create a different result?
Sometimes it is difficult to see the real stuck point when you are standing in the middle of it.
