Why the New School Year Can Feel Like Both
The beginning of a new school year can bring a mix of emotions.
For some people, it is a relief.
Summer can come with less structure, more planning, changing routines, and extra demands. When school begins again, there can be comfort in knowing that schedules are returning and activities are becoming more predictable.
At the same time, the school year brings another kind of pressure.
There are school schedules, extracurricular activities, work commitments, calendars, deadlines, transportation, and the ongoing responsibility of making sure everything runs smoothly.
And somewhere inside all of that, we may find ourselves feeling either stuck or overwhelmed.
They are not quite the same thing.
What It Means to Feel Stuck
Stuckness can feel like entering yet another cycle.
Another school year.
Another round of schedules, activities, responsibilities, and routines.
You may already know what is coming. You may even know exactly what needs to be done.
But you may not like the options in front of you.
There can be a feeling of, “Here we go again.”
For parents especially, that feeling may come from recognizing that this routine will repeat year after year while the kids are growing up.
It can begin to feel as though there is no choice.
“I have to do this.”
“I have to keep this schedule.”
“I have to make all of this work.”
That sense of having no choice is often part of stuckness.
What It Means to Feel Overwhelmed
Overwhelm is different.
When we are overwhelmed, we may also know what needs to be done.
The difference is that there is simply too much on our plate.
There can be a constant flow of events, activities, duties, deadlines, and details to remember.
Everything needs to be organized.
Everything needs to happen on time.
Nothing should be missed.
And somehow, we are also supposed to keep our energy high enough to continue managing all of it.
That can create stress and anxiety.
Overwhelm is not necessarily about disliking the choices available to us. It can be about the sheer amount of information, responsibility, and activity we are trying to manage at once.
Stuckness and Overwhelm Can Be Intertwined
Although they are different, stuckness and overwhelm can exist together.
You may feel overwhelmed by everything that needs to happen while simultaneously feeling stuck because you believe you have no choice but to keep doing it.
That is where it can be helpful to step back.
Instead of immediately focusing on everything that has to get done, ask a different question:
What choices do I have?
And then go one step further:
What choices do I actually want?
There is an important difference between saying, “I have to do this,” and recognizing, “I am choosing to do this.”
The next question is why.
Why am I choosing this?
Look Beyond Today
Sometimes the reason behind our choices becomes clearer when we look at the bigger picture.
Not everything we do is about what has to happen right now.
Many of the choices we make today are connected to a longer-term impact or benefit.
When we understand why we are doing something, the experience can begin to feel different.
The schedule may still be busy.
The activities may still be there.
The responsibilities may not disappear.
But instead of experiencing everything only as something we have to do, we can reconnect it to the reason we chose it.
Planning Creates Clarity
Once we understand our choices, the next step is planning.
What does this season actually require?
What will it take to make it work?
What needs to be organized?
What needs to be put in order?
Planning does not necessarily remove everything from the calendar. It helps us understand what we are asking of ourselves and what it will really take to manage our commitments.
As the new school year begins, you may find yourself feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or a little of both.
Instead of immediately pushing harder, step back.
Look at your choices.
Ask which choices you actually want.
Reconnect with why you are making them.
Then create a plan that reflects what it will really take.
The school year may still be busy, but you can approach that busyness with greater clarity about what you are choosing and why.
